Strong opposition to wind farm project as decision date draws near
169 submissions have been received by Mayo County Council regarding a proposed wind farm in the Mayo Abbey area.
Cunlaghfadda Green Energy have submitted a planning application to the local authority seeking permission to construct seven wind turbines in the townlands of Knockroe, Cunlaghfadda, Harefield, Cloonbaul and Knockaunakill, located close to Mayo Abbey village, as well as a 110kV substation and associated works.
However, the proposal has attracted local opposition with residents citing concerns over the size of the turbines and substation, the proximity to homes in the area, the potential impact upon flora and fauna living close to the proposed site and the overall impact on the village.
The closing date for submissions was last Tuesday, June 23, and a total of 169 submissions have been received by Mayo County Council, the majority of which are from local residents or employees of Mayo Abbey-based businesses, with a submission also made on behalf of Mayo Gaels GAA club.
Representations were also submitted by local Independent councillors Patsy O’Brien and Richard Finn and by Aontú TD Paul Lawless.
Mayo County Council are due to make a decision on this planning application by July 14 next.
