New legislation will pave the way for CCTV in playgrounds

CCTV cameras will be installed in cameras from 2024, it is hoped.
New legislation is on track to make it easier for local authorities to install CCTV at playgrounds, according to a councillor.
Independent Cllr Christy Hyland, from the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, said the new bill will ease concerns from some parents about security in playgrounds across Mayo.
“Parents are coming to me to complain that there’s no CCTV in their playgrounds and I think this new legislation, when it is applied by the local authority, will make it more application friendly,” Cllr Hyland said. “The amount of money that it will save the council in the long run is significant.”
Cllr Hyland, who is a former detective garda, said that the bill should be passed at the start of 2024, as it will come with the Garda bodycam legislation.
