New Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council announced

Cllr Sean Carey was elected as Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council at the Annual General Meeting of the council this morning.
The Fianna Fail councillor takes over the role from Fine Gael’s John O’Hara.
With Fianna Fail and Fine Gael agreeing to join forces following last year’s local elections, the two main parties hold the balance of power in the council chamber.
First elected to Mayo County Council in 2019, Cllr Carey maintained his seat in the 2024 local elections.
He has served as Cathaoirleach of the Westport Belmullet Municipal District on three occasions.
