New 37-unit housing project is approved for Mayo town

Members of Castlebar Municipal District have approved a proposal to construct 37 dwellings at Lios na Circe, Saleen/Milebush, Castlebar.
The development will include new footpaths and roads, service connections, infrastructure, car-parking spaces and other ancillary services. It also involves the construction of a temporary road access at the Regional Training Centre onto the site from the existing access road serving Lios na Circe.
Head of the district, David Mellett, confirmed that the access road will be in place for approximately two years, telling members that the development was being carried out by Mayo County Council and it has engaged with the Irish Wheelchair Association about the allocation of several units.
“There is one specially adapted building with around four units”, he confirmed.
In relation to the access at the back of the training centre, Mr Mellett said: “There is a cul de sac roadway there and the rationale for going in there is to minimise disruption by phase one and then phase two. It is right at the back of the training centre near the railway tracks, with all residents and children passing there, so it will be operational for the duration of the build, which will be around two years. It will however be boarded off from existing residents for a safety point of view.”
Cllr Michael Kilcoyne proposed that the development proceed, seconded by Cllr Al McDonnell and this was agreed by all members.
