'Neglected' road needs to be gritted this winter

A Ballina councillor said all regional roads need to be gritted in winter by Mayo Co Council.

Welcoming the inclusion of the R315 road on the Ballina Municipal District’s Multi-Annual Strengthening Programme 2025-2027, Cllr Michael Loftus said he will be fighting for the road to be included in the winter plan to be gritted.

“The R315 has been neglected for the five years before this,” he told a meeting of the municipal council last week. “Now I hope to fight for it to be included in the winter plan.”

Cllr John O’Hara agreed with Cllr Loftus and said the Attymass road leading to a busy quarry should also be gritted.

Cllr Loftus added all regional roads should be covered in the plan.

“I think there are 22 miles of regional roads not done in the county. The funding needs to be got for this,” he said, adding that the council should be thankful for the people who carry out gritting operations each winter.
