The Director of Roads with Mayo County Council has urged motorists to drive with greater caution this winter, particularly in spells of adverse weather.
Tom Gilligan made his appeal at last week’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District.
“I would appeal to motorists to be a lot more patient and mindful of other users of the road and maybe leave the house a few minutes earlier so you don’t need to rush.”
Mr Gilligan said the council’s Winter Service Maintenance Plan is now active and will be in place until next April.
He advised people to get in touch with the council if they are in need of grit to service their roads.
Cllr Seamus Weir said the public at large needs to be more vigilant and expect heavy rain in the weeks ahead.
Senior engineer Orla Bourke said November is typically the busiest month for the outdoor staff as they complete their programme of works for the year.
