Motorist got €700 bill from fire service after crash

A motorist involved in a road traffic collision was invoiced for the cost of the fire brigade attending the scene, even though they made no call seeking the service.
The matter was raised at last week's meeting of Mayo Co Council by Cllr Gerry Coyle who said the motorist was charged €700. Cllr Coyle noted that the cost was a huge burden on the motorist who is a pensioner.
The council's Director of Services John Condon replied that the fire service is often engaged by An Garda Síochána or a passer-by.
"Only on scene can it be assessed if one was needed, but once it is mobilised, the council has the cost, which can be considerable, so the motorist will be billed and is advised to ensure their insurance covers fire charges in the event of an accident.”
Mr Condon added: “In this case, you mentioned it was a pensioner. If the bill will cause hardship, there is a waiver scheme and form to be filled out and this will be looked at fairly.”
