There are calls for Mayo Co Council to put in place proper signage to direct visitors to a new Erris tourist attraction.

A meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District was held in Solas, a Visitor Experience and Tourism Hub for the North Mayo Gaeltacht village of Eachléim. Since opening last year, over 30,000 visitors have been to the centre.

“We would just like to develop that going forward,” Tina Nic Eafartaigh told councillors.

She highlighted the lack of signage directing visitors to centre.

“We would have a lot of visitors who tell us that they would not have known we were here until they got outside,” Fergus Sweeney told the meeting. He believes Erris and the entire county has “exploded with tourists” in the last year.

“We are really seeing the numbers coming up,” said Fergus who thanked Mayo Co Council and local councillors for their ongoing support.

Cllr Gerry Coyle praised those involved in the Solas centre.

“It’s a credit to you all. The amount of compliments I get for the work you have done.”

Meanwhile, it was revealed at the meeting that showers and toilets will not be a part of the upgrade of the tidal pool in Belmullet. However, the council will apply for future funding for their provision. A portaloo is to be put in place at Blacksod lighthouse for the summer season.
