The west looks set to benefit from milder conditions and avoid a significant drop in temperatures later this week as a cold snap affects other parts of the country.

Met Éireann, has said temperatures will drop to below freezing on Thursday and Friday, with snow, hail and sleet expected in some counties later in the week.

However, the mercury is set to be higher in Mayo with temperatures of up to 11C on Tuesday in the Castlebar and Westport areas while temperatures will reach 10C in Claremorris.

Conditions will be drier and brighter during the morning on Tuesday with sunny spells developing and isolated showers and similar temperatures are expected on Wednesday, although it will be much cloudier.

There will be a slight change on Thursday as temperatures fall to between 4C and 8C in Westport and in many parts of the county, according to Met Éireann.

However, there will be no snow or frost with the coldest conditions expected early on Friday morning when temperatures will drop to 3C.

The early indications for Saturday are that it will be a cloudy day with temperatures of up to 8C and isolated showers.
