Mayo village mourns passing of a true community great

The late Eddie Walsh, Leadymore, Killala

There is a great sense of sadness around Killala and the wider north Mayo area following the passing of Eddie Walsh, Leadymore, Killala.

Eddie was a well-respected member of the Killala community known for his contributions to many facets of local life, in particular Killala GAA club.

He played for the club through all age levels and went on to be involved in various club management and administration roles and was a selector on the Killala team that won the 2006 Connacht Junior Club Championship and also served as Chairman and County Board Delegate among other roles.

He worked in the Water Services section of Mayo County Council for many years and later for Uisce Eireann/Irish Water. Last Wednesday’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District was deferred as a mark of respect to Eddie.

Local councillor Jarlath Munnelly said Eddie’s passing comes as a huge shock to the people of Killala.

“Eddie is a huge loss to the area. He was a big man in stature and a big man in personality and this has left a huge void,” he said.

“He was a great man for the community right across the board and had a further reach through his role with the Council. Eddie had a can-do attitude, he always had a solution and wouldn’t walk away from a problem, he would figure something out.”

“This work ethic gave us so much benefits and Eddie really left his legacy in the community.”

He will be sadly missed by his wife Lena, sons Jonathan and Darren, daughters-in-law Gwen and Suzanne, his granddaughter Sophie, brothers Pat (Shannon), Danny (Killala), sisters Mary (Limerick), Margaret (Sligo), Teresa (Killala) and Josie (Killala), extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

His wake takes place this Saturday at Lynn’s Funeral Home, Killala from 4.30pm to 7.30pm with funeral mass on Sunday in St Patrick’s Church, Killala at 11.30am followed by burial in the local cemetery.
