Work is progressing on a number of Community Recognition Fund (CRF) projects around Castlebar Municipal District in line with grants announced earlier this year.

The CRF is designed to support the development of community infrastructure and facilities where new arrivals, particularly from Ukraine, are being hosted.

In a progress report to Castlebar Municipal District last week, Mayo County Council noted that Manulla Sports Club CLG had received a grant of €83,676 for the development of an accessible safe space. The works are now complete.

Balla Secondary School got a grant of €50,000 to develop changing rooms while €100,000 has been approved to upgrade the leisure facility at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar. The development of the dog park at the same location is progressing, with equipment to be installed in the coming weeks and grass areas to be seeded at the appropriate time. Quotations are also being sought for a canopy to cover the playground at Lough Lannagh.

Funding of €60,000 was provided for the Horror in the Barracks Halloween event in Castlebar while €55,000 was made available for the refurbishment of Cois Abhainn Community Playground at Knockthomas. A contractor has been appointed for this project and the delivery of equipment is awaited.

The Christmas Lights project in Castlebar was awarded €80,000 and quotations are now being assessed.

Meanwhile, a grant of €53,892 has been awarded to Moneen Holdings CLG for improvement works at Castlebar Town FC and works are substantially complete at Castlebar Celtic, which received a grant of €55,475 for LED lights on training pitches.

The council, in conjunction with Mayo Wheelers, is to use a grant of €189,033 for the second phase of Castlebar Skate Park at Lough Lannagh. Discussions have been held with the Skateboard Association of Ireland and local stakeholders and tender documents are due to issue in the coming weeks with construction expected to start in early 2026.

The council also received €50,000 for enhancement works at Castlebar's Market Square and the scope of works is now being reviewed before progressing to tender.
