Just over two weeks after reaching their greatest high, the Mayo senior football team are scaling another famous peak.
A large group of the team and manager Andy Moran are climbing Croagh Patrick today (Monday) with Sam Maguire alongside them.
It’s a clear, bright day at the Reek as a group of 20 or so players mingle with starstruck fans climbing Ireland’s holy mountain.
Among them were Laura Mannion from Breaffy, Castlebar and her cousin, Ciara Molony, from Dublin but with strong roots in Balla.
Laura flew home from Abu Dhabi for the All-Ireland final and is due to fly back on Friday.
“I was hoping against hope I would get to see Sam before I left. I certainly didn’t think I would see it today climbing the Reek,” she told the Western People.
Players were stopped for photographs along the way and would tend run off to the next group, to make up time.
The annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage took place on July 26, the same day as Mayo lifted Sam Maguire for the first time in 75 years. The mountain has huge spiritual and mythical resonance in Mayo and beyond.
