Mayo man injured in 'life threatening' fall

The young Claremorris man is being treated in ICU in Sydney following the Christmas Day accident.

A Mayo man is in intensive care after he sustained serious injuries while cliff jumping in Australia on Christmas Day.

Cathal Canavan, aged 24, from Claremorris, was celebrating Christmas Day on Bronte Beach in Sydney when the accident happened.

It is believed Mr Canavan was jumping from a cliff into an ocean pool when the incident occurred.

He is understood to have fallen 20ft onto concrete.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and he was transported to St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney by helicopter where he received a life-saving operation on Christmas Day.

His family has set up an online fundraiser on iDonate.ie and over €85,000 has been raised. The money will be used for Mr Canavan's medical care, rehabilitation and cost for his parents Shane and Josie and his brother Kieran to be by his side in Australia.

The 24-year old had been working as a plumber in Australia having moved there in October. A popular young man he played for his local GAA club at underage and minor level.

There has been an outpouring of support for the family and “kind hearted” Conor since his accident.

A post on the iDonate page reads: "Although a challenging and long road lies ahead, we are hopeful for his full recovery."

"As those who know him well would tell you, Cathal is an extremely kind-hearted individual. Fiercely loyal, he protects those close to him, and you know that he is always in your corner whenever you need."

"He is hardworking in his trade as a plumber and his mischievous laugh and smile are infectious."

“Every donation, no matter how small, is extremely appreciated. We understand that not everyone is in the position to donate so even by sharing this with others to help spread the word would mean a lot," added the organisers of the appeal.
