Mayo councillor unhappy with approval for windfarm

A Crossmolina-based councillor has said he is against the development of 19 new turbines in North Mayo.

A Crossmolina-based councillor has said he is against the development of 19 new turbines in North Mayo, writes Joan Geraghty.

Cllr Michael Loftus told the February meeting of Mayo County Council that he was not happy to learn that the 19-turbine project in Ballycastle had received planning permission, noting the proximity of the windfarm to the world-famous Céide Fields.

"I don’t agree with it. The Céide Fields will potentially be a world heritage site in years to come and to see them going in there is wrong.”

However, the Fianna Fáil councillor said windfarms such as this one would generate millions of euro through commercial rates and suggested the Mayo County Council should use the money to carry out improvement works on some of the regional roads in North Mayo, such as the R312.
