Mayo child had lucky escape after cycling incident

A Castlebar councillor has said a child was nearly knocked down as a result of the ongoing problem of motorists parking on footpaths and cycle lanes.

Cllr Donna Sheridan told last week's municipal district meeting that there needs to be greater action taken against motorists who park in these areas.

“A child was nearly seriously injured recently because they had to cycle around a car parked on the cycle lane and into the main traffic flow,” she said.

“We can’t have people - and artic truck drivers especially - parking on cycle lanes."

Head of the district David Mellett said this issue has raised some interesting questions around parking arrangements for those who reside within the town itself and arrangements for residents who have visitors. He said the municipal district office has referred the matter to the Active Travel section of Mayo County Council to discuss solutions.
