Mayo author wins award for children's book

Author Anne Printer has been honoured at the 2026 Carousel Aware Prize for Independent Authors.

Mayo author Anne Printer has received national recognition after winning the Best Junior Children’s Book Award for her second book, Higgle the Holly Tree, at the 2026 Carousel Aware Prize for Independent Authors (CAP Awards).

The award was announced at a special ceremony held in Chapters Bookstore, Dublin, on Friday, October 9th.

The CAP Awards celebrate excellence in independent publishing across a range of categories, including fiction, non-fiction, anthologies, children’s books for younger and older readers, and book cover design.

Receiving the award for Higgle the Holly Tree marks a significant achievement for Anne, whose work continues to inspire young readers through imaginative storytelling and a love of nature.

Anne is also one of the many talented authors featured in the Children’s Books of Mayo project, an initiative that showcases the wealth of children’s literary talent across County Mayo. The project highlights local authors and illustrators who are helping to foster a love of reading among young people while celebrating Mayo’s vibrant creative community.

Readers can discover Anne’s work, along with books by many other Mayo-based children’s authors and illustrators, through the Children’s Books of Mayo Map, available from libraries throughout County Mayo. The map provides families, teachers and young readers with an easy way to explore the rich collection of children's literature created by local writers and artists.

Anne’s success is a wonderful reminder of the exceptional literary talent that exists within Mayo and the important role local authors play in inspiring the next generation of readers.
