Man arrested after brandishing knife on university campus

A man has been arrested after reportedly brandishing a knife on the ATU campus in Sligo.

It is reported he threatened passers-by at the university, before being apprehended by Gardaí at around 2pm this afternoon.

In a statement, Gardaí say they responded to reports of a disturbance at approximately 2pm this afternoon in Ballytivnan, Co Sligo.

A man was arrested by Gardaí following the incident.

No injuries were reported.

ATU Sligo have released a statement.

"Students and staff, we want to inform you about the concerning incident that occurred this afternoon at the ATU Sligo campus. A member of the public gained access to the campus grounds and made threats towards students. Thankfully, no injuries occurred, and the individual has been apprehended by Gardaí. Currently, the suspect is in custody at Sligo Garda station.

"We understand that such incidents can be distressing, and we want to remind everyone that support is available through our student services.

"We are working closely with the authorities on this matter. Your cooperation is crucial, and we ask that videos of the incident not be shared online and instead share them with Gardaí at 085 870 2510. This is necessary to allow the authorities to handle the ongoing investigation. Thank you for your understanding."
