As part of An Taisce’s National Spring Clean campaign, Castlebar Tidy Towns organised the annual clean-up of the N5 approach road to the town.

A distance over five kilometres was cleaned by the Castlebar Tidy Towns, members of the International Protection Group and volunteers.

The clean-up lasted a period of just two hours with in excess of 80 Bags of litter collected.

The Castlebar Tidy Towns thank all those that participated in the clean-up and also acknowledge those that sponsored or supported the event on the day.

All participants were treated to light refreshments afterwards and presented with the traditional gift of an Easter Egg at the end.

Special thanks was given to Mayo County Council for providing the extra litter pickers and the pick-up of the litter and to An Taisce Spring Clean Campaign for providing the hi-vis vests, gloves and litter bags as part of their contribution to the campaign.

International Protection refugees have greatly bolstered the efforts of Castlebar Tidy Towns. Volunteers from countries all over the world are lending a hand on a weekly basis.

Every Saturday morning they travel into the town from their accommodation and spend several hours litter picking up and brightening up Castlebar. The Tidy Towns Committee have been blown away by their efforts.

The National Spring Clean is celebrating a quarter of a century this year.

Over the 25 years it has seen the removal of an estimated 47,500 tonnes of litter from Irish streets, parks and coastlines thanks to over 12 million volunteer hours.
