Major Ballina water burst not linked to ongoing Uisce Eireann works

Uisce Eireann have said major water bursts that occurred in Ballina earlier this week had no connection to its ongoing works to replace old pipes in the town.

A major water burst in the middle of Ballina last Wednesday disrupted the supply for a number of customers in the town.

The major burst on Pearse Street occurred the previous night and was the second in a short period, coming just hours after Uisce Éireann crews had repaired a burst that occurred on Tuesday evening. By 5pm on Wednesday evening, water had been restored to all customers.

Uisce Éireann confirmed to the Western People that these bursts were not connected to ongoing Leakage Reduction Programme works taking place in the town.

The utility firm recently began a programme of works to replace more than 1.3km of old pipes that have been causing disruption to the local community for some years.

“The bursts in Ballina last week are not connected to the Leakage Reduction Programme works taking place in the town,” said a spokesperson for Uisce Eireann.

“Uisce Éireann has no knowledge of when or where bursts will take place so, unfortunately, cannot inform customers ahead of a disruption caused by a burst.

“However, the works will put an end to unplanned outages in Ballina town centre. More than 1.3km of old pipe will be replaced in phases along Pearse Street, Lower Pearse Street, Humbert Street, Dillon Terrace, Pawn Office Lane and Emmet Street.”

The spokesperson added that while there may be planned water interruptions during the course of these works, Uisce Éireann will give customers a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any interruptions.
