Long-awaited safety works in tourist town take a big step forward

George's Street has caused ongoing issues for the residents of Newport but finally now looks set to be resolved.

A long-running community campaign to install safety works on a dangerous street looks to be coming to fruition with a contractor appointed to undertake the project.

Concerned parents and business owners have been campaigning for years to have traffic safety works installed on George’s Street in Newport. The street runs through the centre of the tourist town and acts as a main thoroughfare connecting the busy N59 road to Mulranny and Achill.

Westport-based Fianna Fáil councillor Brendan Mulroy said he has received confirmation from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) that works will commence in the coming weeks.

A contractor has been appointed and will formally be awarded the contract shortly. It is hoped the contractor will begin work shortly after Easter.

“Thanks to the George's Street action group for their determination and spirit throughout the process and also thanks to my council colleagues for their support with this over the last number of years,” said Cllr Mulroy.
