Housing scheme in Mayo wins award

The new housing scheme in Carnacon.

Mayo County Council has welcomed an award received for its new housing development in Carnacon.

The nine-unit housing development was recently named the winner in the 'Small Family Housing Project' category at the 2025 Irish Council for Social Housing (ICSH) Community Housing Awards.

The council stated: “This recognition highlights the quality and innovation of the development, which consists of nine age-friendly, energy-efficient homes arranged around a shared green space in the heart of Carnacon village. The project reflects strong community collaboration and sustainable design, and it stood out among national entries for its thoughtful integration into the village setting.”

Meanwhile, detailed design documents for the Ballintubber Abbey Culture and Heritage Centre project, which has been approved for grant aid under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF), are now complete, and contract documents are currently being prepared.

In an update to Castlebar Municipal District last week, Mayo County Council noted that consent from the National Monuments Service is expected imminently. The project is currently progressing through the approvals process with the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht (DRCDG). The next key milestone is the pre-tender approval stage.

Subject to approvals, it is anticipated the project will go to tender before the end of the year.

Elsewhere in the Castlebar Municipal District, a supplier has been appointed for replacement of the canopy at Market Square, which was destroyed during Storm Éowyn last January. The new canopy is expected to be installed by mid-November.
