Historic building in Ballina is 'deemed unsafe'
The Estoria Cinema on Teeling Street in Ballina could accommodate 750 patrons in its heyday in the 1950s.
Local councillors want the former Estoria Cinema at Teeling Street in Ballina to be redeveloped as an arts and community space.
At the June meeting of Ballina Municipal District, Cllr Marie Therese Duffy called on Mayo Co Council to conduct a structural inspection of the Estoria building to determine what space in it is functional and available for use by community groups within the Ballina district.
“I am asking that a report be circulated showing the structural inspection and what is needed to bring it back into use. So many community and drama groups are looking for space for rehearsal, especially in the winter months. We know what the community provides here in terms of arts and drama and the many performances they offer. The Men’s Shed used to be there also.”
Cllr Annie May Reape agreed, saying that revitalisation of the historic building could go hand in hand with Ballina Arts Centre.
Cllr John O’Hara said it was a fine building but had been leaking when the Men’s Shed was in it and would cost an awful lot to repair.
“There are a lot of problems with the roof at the back and probably even a health and safety issue, so I would like it to be made safe first.”
Council architect Emmet O’Donnell said a structural inspection had been carried out by engineers and that it had found issues around cracks and defects.
“The result is it is deemed unsafe in its current condition and significant cost would be needed to remedy it. We have referred the building to the property section and are liaising on that to determine next steps.”
