HGVs continue to use narrow Mayo street

Cllr Al McDonnell highlighted the issue.
Despite signage advising that no heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) should travel through the narrow confines of Castle Street in Castlebar and up the tunnel-like turn at the Mall, the problem of HGVs using the route persists.
The matter was raised at last week's meeting of Castlebar Municipal District by Cllr Al McDonnell who said it has to be stopped.
"The solution is simple, those trucks can come in the Newport Road and divert at Chapel Street to the Westport Road.”
He said he came across two people driving HGVs who had to be helped get around the turn at the old Stewart’s Corner recently.
“Many of the drivers are not Irish. In both of these cases, they needed to reverse the truck all the way back into the Castle Street car park and up onto the kerb at the Danolla’s side, which is a common event now and a major inconvenience that puts pedestrians in danger.”
Cllr Michael Kilcoyne: “Just put a sign up at Newtown saying 'No HGVs'."
Manager of the district David Mellett said there were already signs in place but they were being ignored.
“It is not easy to change the GPS apps that are sending the HGVs up through the town. Signage is the way to go and we will look at that again.”
