Councillor unhappy with update on MUH extension

A Mayo councillor has said he is not happy with an update he received from the HSE in relation to plans for a long-awaited extension to the Emergency Department at Mayo University Hospital, writes Joan Geraghty.

In a written response to Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne's question to the Health Forum West, Health Area Manager Mary Warde wrote: “Planning permission was granted for the Emergency Department and Acute Medical Admission Unit project at MUH on 11th March 2024. The first phase of enabling works is completed. The second phase of enabling works to construct the ambulatory ED modular building is ongoing, all groundworks completed, and on programme for completion in Q4 2025 and will be operational at the end of Q4 2025/start Q1 2026.

“The detailed design is now completed and the tender documentation is being finalised in order to issue to tender for the main contractor.

"Construction of the main building extension works is anticipated to commence by the end of Q1 2026 following completion of the tender and approvals. The completion date will be updated following appointment of the main contractor on receipt of the contract programme.”

Cllr Kilcoyne responded: “I know you can only give me the position the way it is but the extension is badly needed and this issue is going on a long time. The result is the trolleys continue to build all the time.

"I accept you are doing your best and obviously if the Department gave you the money it would be built, so I accept what you are saying but am not happy," the Castlebar-based councillor added.
