Grenade discovered at popular Mayo location
Army personnel carried out a controlled explosion.
A controlled explosion was carried out following the discovery of a 109-year old grenade in Castlebar.
The historical incendiary was discovered by a man out walking at Lough Lannagh on Saturday evening. The eagle-eyed pedestrian spotted the grenade close to the water at an area to the rear of the car park.
Gardai were informed and Army officers were tasked to the scene with the popular lakeside location cordoned off.
The entire operation took around four hours with Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel carrying out a controlled explosion.
A Garda spokesperson said the grenade is believed to be more than 100 years old. It has a provenance dating back to 1917, one year after the Easter Rising.
