Gardaí seize vehicle out of tax for over 1,000 days during Mayo operation

Gardaí from the Road Policing Unit in Mayo conducting Easter Roads Policing detected a number of suspected drunk drivers during yesterday's operations.

Over the course of yesterday (Monday), there were four motorists detected on suspicion of drunk driving. One of these motorists detected was also a disqualified driver and had their vehicle impounded.

Another vehicle was detected with their tax out 1,299 days and the vehicle was impounded.

Fixed Charge Penalty Notices and court proceedings will follow for these motorists.

In relation to their nationwide operations over the weekend, Gardaí released the following statement.

"Throughout the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend, an extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation was in place between 7am Thursday 17th April until 7am on Tuesday, 22nd April 2025.

"There were three fatalities on our roads during this period and 11 serious collisions took place that resulted in 12 people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries.

"Over this Bank Holiday period, An Garda Síochána carried out more than 912 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints. Over 4,500 breath tests and 213 oral fluid tests were performed which led to 149 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

"Throughout the weekend, over 2800 drivers were detected for speeding offences."

"Fixed Charge Offences for other road offences during this period included:

• Using Mobile Phones – 225

• Unaccompanied learner drivers – over 160

• No seatbelts – 73

"In addition:

• 109 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied

• 438 vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance

"An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road."
