COMMUNITY NOTES: NORTH MAYO - WESTERN PEOPLE (JULY 22 EDITION)
Huge numbers gathered in the Church of Christ the King, Knockmore on Monday last for the 11am Requiem Mass for the late Dickie Nallon and to bid a fond farewell to a special member of the community.
Dickie passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 3, surrounded by his beloved family who cared for him so lovingly during his final illness.
Dickie was born on Ballymacredmond to parents Richard and Kate Nallon was a member of a family of three. He married the love of his life Mary and they reared a family of four, a family that they were so proud of.
During the homily at his funeral Mass he was remembered as a special husband, father and grandfather, a person of great faith and love for the outdoor life.
At the beginning of his Mass many symbols from his life were brought to the Altar and amongst them was a rosary beads, a symbol of Dickie ‘s love for Our Lady. Family photo signifying his love for family and relatives, a miniature saw and sod of turf a symbol of the love Dickie had for working in the bog and cutting timber, a dog ornament signifying his love for dogs and animals, a map of Ireland, Dickie travelled every county in Ireland to fairs, marts, and funerals. Along this journey Dickie made lifelong friends. A dealing stick as no task was complete without it in hand. A music CD, Dickie enjoyed nothing better than listening to music on his travels, it was his companion, while also keeping up to date with Mid-West radio. And lastly a photo of Dickie ‘s cherished mare ‘Bally Fair Deal’ who competed so successfully for many years, this brought great pride and joy to him and his family. Dickie was privileged to see her having her first foal in recent weeks. Those symbols were to sum up the treasured memories of his life, a life well lived and a life lived to the full.
Dickie was pre-deceased by his parents Richard and Kate and in very recent years by his two beloved sisters Annie and Mary. He is survived by his treasured wife Mary (of 58 yesrs), his son Richie, daughters Maria, Angela and Sharon, his beloved nine grandchildren, daughter-in- law, sons-in-law, nephews and nieces, relatives and many friends.
May he now rest in peace in his final resting place in Ballinahaglish Cemetery.
