Fatality could occur if Mayo bridges aren't made safer

Fianna Fáil Cllr Paul McNamara has raised the issue on numerous occasions, most recently at the October meeting of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District.
Three bridges in Achill are an “accident waiting to happen”, according to a local councillor.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Paul McNamara has raised the issue on numerous occasions, most recently at the October meeting of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District.
The Achill representative told last week’s meeting that there has been two more accidents at one of the bridges along the R319 in Cashel.
“There is only a matter of time before something serious happens. What’s happening is that people who know the area, give way for traffic coming from one side or the other, but tourists visiting the area think two cars will pass or a campervan and a car will pass on the bridge and an accident occurs,” Cllr McNamara said.
Cllr McNamara said that he fears that a major accident, possibly a fatality, could take place there if the bridges are not made safer.
“Is it a case that the only way we’re going to replace the bridges in Cashel is that a major accident occurs there?” he said.
Head of the district, Padraic Walsh said that there are projects ahead of it on the county list, and there is currently no funding available, but he would raise the issue with Mayo County Council’s Head of Roads, Paul Dolan.
Cllr McNamara said that it is not currently on the list and all it takes is “someone to lift a pen”.
