Alan Dillon TD has confirmed that €7.5 million in funding has been secured for a large-scale sports campus in Castlebar.

On a social post, Dillon said: "I'm really proud to announce that after years of campaigning with the support of local sporting stakeholders and Mayo County Council we've secured €7.5 million in funding under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF).

This ambitious sporting campus includes:

- A multi-lane, international-standard running track

- Multi-sport playing fields with new 4G synthetic grass for GAA, soccer, and rugby

- All facilities will be equipped with floodlights.

Dillon added: "As someone who knows the value of playing and participating in sport, this new sports campus will be a game changer in Mayo's sporting infrastructure, providing top-tier facilities for our athletes and young people to train and compete.

"Working closely with David Mellett and Mayo County Council, the key sporting stakeholders (GAA, Soccer, Rugby and Castlebar AC) we’ve made this ambitious vision a reality. It hasn’t happened without its challenges, but wish to sincerely thank Minister Catherine Martin for her collective support.

"Let us all appreciate today’s news and celebrate this fantastic milestone that everyone has worked so hard to achieve."
