European designation change 'will impact' funding for Mayo
Tom Gilligan, a Director of Services with Mayo Co Council.
Mayo Co Council Director of Services Tom Gilligan has flagged a change in regional designation that is set to impact EU funding for Mayo.
At the February meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District, Mr Gilligan referred to recent reports that highlighted how border counties will lose out on EU funding after the European Commission upgraded the north-west of Ireland from 'transition region" to a “more developed region”.
Mr Gilligan told members: “You would have seen the article during the week and this story is very relevant to here. Border counties are to lose out to other poorer districts as the EU is upgrading this region from a transition area, and this will impact the new funding period from 2028-2034. What this means is that if a €100 million project gets EU funding, it will receive €40 million instead of the €60 million it would get under the current status, and the government will have to fund the gap. I think this is a very significant announcement and will have an impact in relation to Mayo and the border counties.”
