Estates not supplied with sufficient grit during recent cold snap, says councillor

Estates were not supplied with adequate grit during the recent cold snap, says a local councillor
A Castlebar councillor has asked that salt and gravel be provided in the county town to help residents grit the estate roads during inclement weather,
Speaking at last week's municipal district meeting, Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne said he had been under the impression that salt and gravel would be provided in estates in the town, but it was not made available during the recent cold snap, leaving many residents, including the elderly, housebound.
Cllr Kilcoyne asked for a report at the next meeting containing a list of locations where salt and gravel were distributed during the recent icy weather.
The head of the municipal district David Mellett said he would provide the details.
"The ice is really serious and something needs to be done," said Cllr Kilcoyne. "I need the commitment that if there is ice, grit will be provided to people living in the affected areas. The footpaths in many areas and roads coming out of estates were lethal during the cold weather," he said.
