Enniscrone mourns beloved community champion

Edward 'Ned' Kilcullen was involved in numerous community groups in his native Enniscrone.

Warm tributes have been paid to a leading figure in the Enniscrone community who passed away recently.

Edward ‘Ned’ Kilcullen of Boat Port Lodge, Enniscrone died peacefully at his residence surrounded by his family on February 9th last.

Mr Kilcullen is remembered fondly in the area as a great neighbour, community man and businessman. He was involved in practically every committee or sub-committee formed in the town over a 50-year period including the local community council, town improvement group and the Enniscrone Show, which paid a fond tribute to him.

“Our hearts are deeply saddened by the loss of our Show President Edward Kilcullen. He was instrumental in the Show’s revival in 1990 and has continued to be a beacon of inspiration to the committees since.

“In fact, as a boy back in 1939, he entered vegetables in the very first show in Enniscrone and served on the committee for many years before becoming president in 2015.”

“His unwavering support and mentorship to the committee in Castleconnor over the past eight years have left an indelible mark on all of us.”

Mr Kilcullen was also a founding member and director of Waterpoint in Enniscrone and ran the family business Kilcullen's Seaweed Baths.

Local Cllr Joe Queenan said he was a lovely man who had the respect of everybody in the town of Enniscrone.

“He was a really well-liked man, a gentleman, who was prominently involved in so many community groups in the town,” he said.

Mr Kilcullen will be sadly missed by his sons, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, sisters, extended family members, neighbours and many friends.

His funeral took place last Wednesday at the Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Enniscrone and was followed by burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass.

May he rest in peace.
