East Mayo mourns the loss of former school principals

The highly regarded educators were key figures in their communities.

East Mayo is mourning the loss of two esteemed educators.

John Gallagher, a former principal of Scoil Muire agus Padraic in Swinford and Anne Cunnane, a retired principal of St Aiden’s National School in Kiltimagh recently passed away.

Mr Gallagher, of Cloonfinaun Swinford died surrounded by his loving family following a short illness. He was laid to rest on Saturday.

Mr Gallagher is deeply mourned by his devoted wife Mary and his children Claire, Shane, Michael and Aidan, his much-adored grandchildren Grace, Seán, Niamh, Hugh, Kate, Maedbh and Saoirse, his daughters-in-law Lorraine, Caríona and Eliza, his brother Michael and his sister Maureen, his extended family, and his wide circle of friends and neighbours.

A highly respected teacher and principal, Mr Gallagher was also a hugely popular figure in his local community.

Mrs Cunnane (nee O’Shea) passed in the wonderful care of the staff of Mayo Hospice after a short illness bravely borne with courage and dignity. The popular former principal was also a former Lady Captain of Ballyhaunis Golf Club and the Kiltimagh woman was a leading light in the locality.

"As a teacher and school principal, she enriched the lives of countless people through her guidance and care,” said Ballyhaunis Golf Club in tribute.

She is deeply mourned by her devoted husband Anthony (Tony), her daughters Catriona and Louise, son Padraig and her much adored grandchildren, Daire, Molly Mai and Emily. Mrs Cunnane was laid to rest on Friday.
