Driver going almost twice the speed limit on busy Mayo road arrested

A driver caught going almost twice the speed limit on a Mayo road was arrested and had his car seized.

Last night (Friday) on a wet N17, the Mayo Roads Policing Unit detected a vehicle travelling at 183km/h in a 100km/h zone.

The car was seized under Section 109(A) of the Road Traffic Act.

The novice driver was arrested, and they now face a two-year driving disqualification, a fine of up to €5,000, or up to six months in prison. 

An Garda Síochana Mayo stated: “Speeding at this level puts everyone on the road at risk.

“Slow down. Drive safe. Arrive alive.”
