Devastation as deliberate fire destroys Mayo walking trail

The popular trail has been left decimated by the fire.

A popular Mayo walking trail was targeted in a suspected overnight act of arson.

The Claggan Mountain Coastal trail has been reduced to cinders following a fire last night.

Located north of Mulranny, along the N59, it is the only all abilities walking trail located within Wild Nephin National Park.

The fire is believed to have broken out at around 10pm. Nothing was burned either side of the trail or across the road with deliberate arson suspected. Gardai are investigating.

“Due to the effects of a large wildfire last night, the Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail will remain closed until further notice.

There is currently an investigation underway into the cause of the wildfire. Cleanup and repair works cannot commence until this investigation is completed,” said Wild Nephin National Park management in a statement on social media.

“There were heartbreaking scenes at Claggan Mountain this morning as the aftermath of the wildfire became plain to see.

The Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail is a very popular trail, with over 12,000 people enjoying it last year. It was a place where schoolchildren and groups could learn about our bogs, and families could enjoy a day out surrounded by breathtaking views," the statement added.

We would like to thank the Ballycroy Tidy Towns committee for their support and all involved in dealing with the fire last night.” Mayo TD Rose Conway Walsh said it was a “really disturbing” incident.
