The decision to approve a second McDonald's restaurant in Mayo has been appealed
A decision to grant planning permission for a new McDonald’s drive-thru restaurant in Mayo has been appealed to An Coimisiún Pleanála.
Last month, Mayo County Council gave the green light for the fast-food outlet in Claremorris. It will be the second McDonald's restaurant in the county.
The site is located along Knock Road, adjacent to the Silverbridge Plaza Shopping Centre.
Local councillor Richard Finn had previously urged council planners to approve the development.
“I cannot stress the importance of such a brand wanting to come to Claremorris,” Cllr Finn told a meeting of Claremorris Municipal District.
He said an “international brand who wants to invest in the area” should be supported.
Objections to the project included concerns over increased traffic, noise, loitering and impact on residential parking.
Concerns were also expressed over how the global fast-food chain might affect existing local food businesses in the town.
Following engagement with Mayo County Council, the applicant proposed to feature a two-lane operating system at the restaurant. The change was made in response to concerns regarding potential traffic impacts and access to the shopping centre’s existing access road.
Permission was granted for the drive-thru subject to 13 conditions.
