Woman gets prison term for sixth no-insurance offence

The woman pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court.
A woman has been jailed after she was caught driving without insurance for a sixth time.
Lorraine McKenna, aged 42, of Ocean Wave, Salthill, Co Galway pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court to driving without insurance at Knock on April 25, 2021. She also admitted to driving without reasonable consideration for other road users.
Gda Frank Cosgrove said he observed the driver of an Audi perform a "swan-like manoeuvre" on the road. He pursued the vehicle, stopped it, and spoke to the driver, Ms McKenna. She failed to produce insurance. A fixed charge penalty notice for driving without reasonable consideration went unpaid.
McKenna has five previous convictions for driving without insurance, as well as convictions for careless driving and a hit and run.
Solicitor Kathleen Henry said her client "had been told by her partner that she was temporarily insured for two days", adding: “She realises she should not have been driving and apologises."
A suspended prison sentence imposed in September 2020 will be reactivated by this latest conviction and McKenna is due to appear before Ennis District Court on December 13 in relation to that matter.
Judge Fiona Lydon imposed a four-month jail term. Recognisance was fixed in the event of an appeal.
