Westport neighbours tell court they want to put an end to dispute

Castlebar District Court heard that both parties were eager to resolve the dispute.

A judge has adjourned criminal charges against a man who had a row with a neighbour.

John Keane, Cuiltrean, Clogher, Westport pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court to criminal damage and assault.

Insp Elaine Horan told the court that Michael Cusack contacted Gardaí on November 9, 2020, to report an argument with the defendant while sheep were being moved along the road. Mr Cusack said Keane had taken a stick out of his own vehicle and proceeded to bang Mr Cusack’s jeep with it before striking the complainant through the window of the jeep. The damage to the vehicle totalled €2,200.

Gda Edel Sharkey said there had been ongoing issues between Keane and Cusack over adjoining lands.

Keane told the court that he had a good relationship with the Cusack family, who own the land that borders his own, but issues arose between them in recent years. Keane said he lost his temper on the date in question and was sorry it happened. He now wished to get things resolved and move on.

Mr Cusack told the court he also hopes matters can be resolved.

Keane had no previous convictions. No victim impact statement was forthcoming.

Judge Vincent Deane said he would adjourn the matter to November 24, 2024, to see how both parties get along.
