Westport chef was found with quantity of cannabis

Castlebar District Court heard that the defendant was found in possession of cannabis valued at €1,200.

A Westport resident, who was caught with a haul of cannabis, has received a five-month suspended prison sentence.

Alin Lucan of Bruach na hAbhainn, Westport, pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court to possessing drugs for sale or supply on April 4, 2021, at Tesco Apartments, Westport.

The court heard that Gardaí from the Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit searched the defendant’s then residence at Tesco Apartments on the date in question and found cannabis with a street value of €1,600 along with paraphernalia such as a weighing scales that were used for preparing the drugs for distribution.

Lucan has no previous convictions.

Solicitor Tom Walsh said his client, a chef, had been addicted to cannabis at the time and was also supplying the drugs to friends.

“He is now clean, and he has learned his lesson,” he said. “He is a Romanian national who has been 12 years in Ireland, and he is gainfully employed and is contributing to society.”

Mr Walsh said his client is adamant he will not be before the courts again and Sgt McShane agreed that Lucan had cooperated with Gardaí.

Judge Vincent Deane imposed a five-month jail term which he agreed to suspend on condition there are no offences in the next two years. He also warned the defendant he was lucky not to be going straight to prison.
