Uninsured driver was getting food for sick sister, court is told

The defendant pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before Castlebar District Court.

A man caught driving without insurance and licence claimed he borrowed a car to get food for his sick sister.

Michee Giyama, with an address at The Sports Arena, Breaffy, pleaded guilty to the motoring offences when he appeared before Castlebar District Court.

The court heard that Giyama was stopped by Gardai while driving at Carrownlurlaur, Breaffy on March 2 last and admitted driving without a licence or insurance.

The defendant has an international driving licence from The Congo and has since received a learner permit and taken out car insurance.

Giyama, who is an international protection refugee, is a guardian for three of his siblings. He said one of his sisters suffers from sickle-cell anaemia. She was sick on the date of the offence and he borrowed his brother’s car in order to get her food.

Judge Fiona Lydon adjourned the case until December 22 for Gardai to examine Giyama’s current insurance policy.
