Man in court for speeding offence

The defendant pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court.
A man admitted driving without undue care and attention when he overtook a car at speed on the way into Ballinrobe.
Mark Heneghan, of Rathgranagher, Hollymount, appeared before a sitting of Castlebar District Court.
The court heard that Gda Martin Forde was on duty at 11.05pm on the Kilmaine Road, Ballinrobe when he saw a white BMW drive towards him at speed.
He followed the car and saw it overtake a vehicle as it entered the boundary of Ballinrobe town. The Garda lost sight of the vehicle soon after but used CCTV to track down the car and its owner.
He spoke to Heneghan the next day who made full admissions. A fixed charge penalty notice was issued but went unpaid.
Solicitor Cathy McDarby said Heneghan went to the Post Office to pay the fixed charge penalty but did not have enough money at the time. When he thought to pay it again it was too late.
The accused has no previous convictions.
Judge Fiona Lydon ordered Heneghan to carry out the Pro-Social Driving Course.
“Speed kills,” the judge warned. “We don’t have the roads in Mayo for speeding,” she added.
The case was adjourned until January 16 next for completion of the course.
