Man grew cannabis to avoid having to deal with drug dealers, court told

The man pleaded guilty at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court to possessing and cultivating the drug.
A man cultivated cannabis plants so he would not have to deal with criminals, a court has heard.
Joe Connon, of Tawnaghmore, Ballyhaunis, pleaded guilty at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court to possessing and cultivating the drug.
The court was told that gardai searched the defendant's residence on April 23, 2021, and discovered a sophisticated growing tent containing nine cannabis plants. The plants were valued at €7,200. Cannabis valued at €1,370 was also found in glass jars.
Connon has no previous convictions.
Barrister Diarmuid Connolly, representing Connon, said his client was a "gentle and almost naïve individual" who began growing the drug so he would not have to interact with drug dealers.
Connon used cannabis to help deal with anxiety and depression issues when medication was not working. The court heard he had previously been prescribed cannabis oil when living in Canada.
“This is a good man who has done a stupid thing,” said the barrister.
Judge Eoin Garavan agreed that Connon is "not exactly an entrenched criminal" but expressed concern when he learned from a probation report that the accused continues to use cannabis that is gifted to him.
Connon said he has been getting better results from new medication and it is his aim to come off the drug completely.
He said he and his partner are establishing an organic farm in Ballyhaunis.
“I hope it’s not
organic, Mr Connon!” commented Judge Garavan. The judge adjourned the case until July 10, 2024.
