Man convicted of dangerous driving after garda chase
The defendant pleaded guilty to the offence.
A 20-year-old man has admitted to dangerous driving arising out of a car chase with gardaí.
Jamie Corduff, of Muing Road, Belmullet, pleaded guilty at the local district court to dangerous driving and not having insurance.
Garda Sean Hough told the court he was on patrol at Pearse Street, Belmullet, on March 26, 2024, when a car took off at speed on American Street. He gave chase and the car turned down Bridge Road without indicators before travelling on the wrong side of the road at the lifeboat station. It later turned at the R313 junction without stopping and without indicators.
Garda Hough was unable to catch up with the vehicle, which was later found abandoned at the rear of a house and seized. He spoke to the defendant on April 3 and Corduff admitted to driving the car on March 26. The defendant has nine previous convictions, including one for dangerous driving.
Solicitor Alan Gannon told the court that his client is currently unemployed, is due to become a father and hopes to go abroad.
"He has a lot of growing up to do,” remarked Mr Gannon.
Noting the previous conviction for dangerous driving, Judge Sandra Murphy imposed a four-year driving disqualification, a €500 fine and ordered Corduff to undergo the Pro-Social driving course.
