Jailed for litany of motoring offences

The defendant pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court.

A man has been jailed for a litany of motoring offences.

Damien Pachioch, Brooklands, Castlebar, pleaded guilty at the local district court to driving while holding a mobile phone, driving without tax, insurance, a license or a valid NCT.

Gda Anthony Friel said he stopped Pachioch at 12.15pm on June 21, 2023, after observing him driving while using a mobile telephone. Gda Friel said the tax had expired on the vehicle in December 2021, the insurance had expired in February 2022 and the NCT had expired on April 4, 2021.

Gda Friel told the court he was also aware that Pachioch had been disqualified from driving at this time and he seized the vehicle.

Pachioch has a number of previous convictions.

Solicitor Cathy McDarby said her client had been on his way to sell the vehicle when he was stopped.

Judge Fiona Lydon said there were "no mitigating factors, only aggravating ones". She said the defendant "ought to have known better".

The judge imposed a four-month custodial sentence, a disqualification of four years and fines totalling €900.
