Hotel withdraws licence application

Hotel withdraws licence application

The application was withdrawn at Castlebar District Court.

A well-known Mayo hotel has withdrawn an application for the renewal of a liquor licence after a local man objected on the basis that the premises are currently being used to house refugees.

Last September, Breaffy man Stephen Kerr objected to the renewal of the liquour licence for the Breaffy Woods Hotel because "it is now a Ukrainian refugee centre".

“I’m objecting on the grounds of the applicant’s character and the unfitness and unsuitability [of the premises] for the needs of the persons residing in the neighbourhood,” he told the court.

“Also, since this property no longer operates as a hotel it’s not accessible to the public and it is ineligible for the renewal of the publican’s licence. It is now a Ukrainian refugee centre as opposed to an open hotel,” Mr Kerr added.

Solicitor Patricia Lally, representing the hotel, opposed Mr Kerr’s objection in September.

The case was partially heard and came before Castlebar District Court again last week.

Ms Lally told Judge Vincent Deane on Thursday that the hotel would now be withdrawing its application for the renewal of the licence. The judge ruled that the matter was now closed as a result.
