Drunk driving case is a ‘wake-up call’

The defendant pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court.
A Westport man got a "wake-up call" when he was stopped for drunk driving.
Michael McCabe, aged 44, of 18 Pairc na Coille, Golf Course Road, Westport pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court to drunk driving.
Insp Maria Hayes told the court that McCabe was stopped by Gardaí on August 13, 2022, driving between Westport and Newport. He was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and taken to Westport Garda Station where he provided a blood sample that subsequently gave a reading of 274mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 50mg.
McCabe has one previous conviction.
Solicitor Gary Mulchrone said his client, a father of three, wished to apologise for his behaviour.
“He has been trying to keep himself on the straight and narrow. This has been a wake-up call for him,” said Mr Mulchrone.
Adjourning the case until May 21, Judge Fiona Lydon requested a probation report and ordered McCabe to undergo the Pro-Social driving course.
