Drug offender put on probation bond

Drug offender put on probation bond

The defendant pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court.

A young man who was found in possession of cocaine has been placed on probation.

Thomas Rose, aged 20, of Carrabawn, Westport pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court to possessing drugs valued at €300 at Ballinrobe Road, Castlebar, on June 14, 2022.

The court heard that the drugs were found after the defendant was arrested by Sgt Padraic Naughton.

Solicitor James Ward submitted an updated probation report which he described as positive.

“I think it makes for good reading and there has been meaningful engagement by Mr Rose,” he said.

Mr Ward said his client had undergone hair follicle testing in December to prove he was drug-free but was still awaiting the results. He handed in a drug test from November that was clear.

Rose has a previous conviction and is currently before Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court on a separate matter.

Mr Ward asked Judge Deane if a probation bond could be considered, and Judge Deane agreed but imposed several conditions, including that the defendant remains drug-free, and continues to engage with the Probation Service and with local addiction services as well as St John Of God Hospital. Rose was also fined €500.
