Driving ban for man did not remain at scene of accident

The defendant pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court.
A motorist who left the scene of an accident after inadvertently causing damage to a lorry has received a hefty fine.
Joe Glynn, aged 61, Derrclaha, Kiltimagh, previously pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court to charges of dangerous driving and failing to have insurance or a licence.
The court heard that Glynn's vehicle pulled onto the N17 in front of a lorry at Shanaghmoyle, Knock, at 1.45pm on August 24, 2021. The truck was forced to brake suddenly and some of its load of steel became dislodged, causing damage to the trailer and cab of the vehicle. Glynn failed to remain at the scene.
Solicitor John Dillon-Leetch said it was a sunny day and his client did not see the truck coming when he pulled out onto the road. Glynn had neither a car nor a driving licence and had recently returned from Dublin to care for his mother when the incident occurred.
The solicitor said his client has problems with his eyes that currently prevent him from driving. The case was adjourned with Glynn appearing before the local district court again last week.
Mr Dillon-Leetch said his client’s eye condition means he will never drive again. The court heard a Probation Report puts him at low risk of re-offending.
Judge Lydon imposed a two-year driving ban and a fine of €1,000.
