Delivery man loses licence over drink driving offence

A delivery driver received a two-year driving ban at Castlebar District Court.

A delivery driver who got behind the wheel of his own vehicle while intoxicated has received a two-year driving ban.

Shaun Devaney, aged 34, of Knockmore, Manulla, Castlebar pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court to the offence.

Gda Insp Maria Hayes said Gda Nicola Flesk was on patrol on the Breaffy Road at 1.55am on September 26, 2021 when she arrested the defendant on suspicion of drink driving.

A blood test gave a reading of 125mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 50mg.

Devaney has no previous convictions.

Solicitor Gary Mulchrone said his client works as a driver for a local company and the disqualification will have very serious implications.

“He is going to have to make a lot of changes to his life, he lives about five miles outside Castlebar,” he added.

Mr Mulchrone appealed to Judge Fiona Lydon for leniency. He also asked if the driving ban could be postponed until June 1 so that Devaney could get his affairs in order.

Judge Lydon noted that the defendant had completed the Pro Social driving course and he had met the case in the right way.

She imposed the mandatory driving ban and a €200 fine with four months to pay.
