Cocaine user ‘got in over his head’

Castlebar District Court heard that the defendant had the drugs for sale as well as for personal use.

A Castlebar man has been heavily fined after he "got in over his head" with drugs.

Gerry Hunt, aged 28, Drumask, Turlough Road, Castlebar pleaded guilty at the local district court to possessing cocaine for personal use and for sale or supply.

Gda James O’Brien told the court that a search warrant was executed at Hunt’s then address in the Newport Road area of Castlebar on December 4, 2021. During the search, 4.753gm of suspected cocaine in seven different deal bags were seized. Further analysis confirmed that it was cocaine with a street value of €332.71.

Hunt admitted to selling the drugs as well as having them for personal use. He has no previous convictions.

Gda O’Brien said Hunt has not been on the Garda radar since this incident.

Solicitor Gary Mulchrone said his client "got in over his head" concerning his use of cocaine and described this incident as "a misstep in his life".

Imposing a fine of €1,500, Judge Vincent Deane said the incident seemed to be a one-off.
